Company T-Mobile Czech Republic approached us with a request to develop a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook which would enable sending SMS in a similar way as e-mails. Main requirements were on user friendly environment and on support of all versions of Microsoft Outlook starting from version Outlook 97.
Solution for sending SMS from MS Outlook
Because of compatibility with older versions of Microsoft Outlook we chose a combination of Microsoft Exchange Client Extension (for Outlook 97) and Microsoft COM Add-in (for Outlook 2000 and higher) technologies. These technologies enabled us to enhance user interface so that it would support sending SMS. New T-Mobile Office SMS bar, which contains buttons for sending new SMS and forwarding e-mails as SMS, was added to standard bars. All sent SMS are stored in “Sent SMS” folder which is part of personal folders in Microsoft Outlook.

Function
After installing T-Mobile Office SMS a new bar for sending SMS messages will appear in MS Outlook and in menu Settings will appear a new tab where you can set all properties for sending SMS. Users can use mobile phone numbers of people which they have stored in Contacts when sending SMS. Messages can be send on predefined lists as well. In every message you can chose if you want to send it as a normal SMS (on SIM card) or only on display and if you want to receive confirmation. Application allows you to forward incoming e-mails as SMS messages (limited by a maximum length of message) and to forward sent SMS via email. Physically the message is sent through T-Mobile Private SMS gate (and connection to T-Mobile network is mediated by T-Mobile SMS Connect service or a phone with T-Mobile SIM card).
