Technological Background

First layer of successful Business Intelligence solution is a Data Warehouse. Data are usually stored in many individual systems which do not communicate between each other which means they are not able to provide valuable information to their users. The first step is to aggregate all available data into a central storage using suitable structures. This storage, called Data Warehouse, contains consolidated data optimized for fast analysis, reporting and archiving of data.

The purpose of Data Transformation Services (DTS) is to periodically take data from given part of an existing IT system (such as CRM or ERP system) and copy them into the Data Warehouse. The copying process usually involves structure transformation and data filtering in order to obtain only the most significant data. The process consists of 3 steps: extracting data from existing data source (Extraction), transforming data to fit business needs (Transformation) and saving data into target Data Warehouse (Loading).

Reporting tools visualize data which have been collected through a user-friendly application interface. Each report can contain numerous tables, charts or diagrams which can by filtered, sorted or grouped by various parameters. A generated report can be saved to wide range of formats such as Excel Spreadsheet (XLS) or PDF. A user can also schedule automatic report sending so that he receives the report into his mailbox in given time intervals.
